Diving for Juniors - What is a Bubble Maker?

As a passionate dive instructor and father to a boy, I'm eager to share with him the underwater world's magic. Witnessing the awe on his face as he encounters vibrant coral reefs and curious marine life would be an unforgettable experience. But I also have questions: Is my son ready for diving? Can he experience the same wonder and joy I have?

The answer is a resounding yes! Many children as young as 8 can safely explore the underwater world through programs like PADI's Bubblemaker. This program introduce kids to basic diving skills and allow them to experience the underwater environment under controlled conditions.

Here's why introducing your son to diving could be the perfect adventure:

  • Spark curiosity and a love for nature: Diving opens a window to an incredible world hidden beneath the surface, fostering a deeper appreciation for our planet.

  • Build confidence and independence: Learning new skills and overcoming challenges under your guidance boosts his confidence and independence.

  • Strengthen your bond: Sharing this unique experience creates lasting memories and strengthens your bond as parent and child.

  • Promote healthy habits: Diving encourages an active lifestyle and respect for the environment.

Of course, safety is paramount. Choose a reputable dive center with experienced instructors trained to guide young divers.

In this article, we will be discussing:

  • When can a child start to experience scuba diving?

  • Will it be safe?

  • What do we do to let your child enjoy the session?

What is Bubble maker?

Minimum age to start the BubbleMaker course is 8 years old. This is basically a pool session and they are not allowed to dive in the open sea yet. During this course, they will use the whole scuba equipment and “play” with it underwater. This would be great to instill interest in them and also they can boast to their friends in school that they went diving ;-)

What is junior open water?

This is where I want my son to start. But he’s 8.. so unfortunately, the minimum age to start the Open Water Course is 10 year old. In this course, the kid will go through pretty much everything an adult would do the only restriction is the kid is limited to 12m for the open sea dive. This would be a great bonding course to do with your kids if you are not certified yet.

So to summarize;
BubbleMaker: 8-10 years. Confined pool session. Fun and games. No certification

Jr Open Water Diver: 10 years and above. Same course curriculum as an adult Open Water Diver. 12m depth limitation. Get to dive in the open sea with accompany of an adult. Junior Open Water Diver Certified.
